Crazy for hats

I’ve been making a bunch of hats lately. It’s likely due to the chilly, wet weather we’ve been having. Or because I lost my favorite one. Maybe both!

Admittedly, part of the hat craze is a result of peer pressure from some friends in my knitting chat. Some of them were talking about this hat designed by another chatter’s friend. It’s a cute hat, next thing I knew I was casting on for it! If you are wondering, it’s the hipstamatic hat. Link is the name. I’ve made two already and am about to cast on a 3rd. Thus far they have all become gifts. 😛

Here is the first one. For full details, please see my project page on ravelry here. Important things to note about this hat is I chose to use the Chinese waitress cast-on. Previous to this project I had only read/heard about it. While it is fiddly to do, the end result is a fantastic looking and stretchy edge. I really like it and plan on using it for any hat I make in future years.

The yarn I used is Manos del Uruguay Maxima. Upon first feel of the entire skein it had that almost that itchy soft. I nearly didn’t buy this, but I loved the colors in it. However when worked up it creates a rather nice soft feel. I give it 3 stars for that. They do have beautiful colors that aren’t too busy.

Back in fall I noticed that Quince was in need of a new hat. After some looking around I thought I had found a prefect yarn for him, blue with accents of yellow and greens. It is Queensland Collection in Brisbane. The pattern is Stephen West’s Windschief hat. Came out really well! The final photo links to my ravelry project page. IMG_4183 IMG_4202

Finished and in use

I give this yarn 5 stars! It’s a pleasure to work with and looks good. I’ve been eyeing a couple other color ways for future projects. In the case of Quince’s hat, the colors pooled well. I know, it is a self pooling yarn, however there is still a chance of not liking the end result.

EDIT March 25: One more hat!! Dubbed, rainbow hat, it’s another hipstamatic.IMG_4538Here is the link to my ravelry stash for details on what yarn I used.
