Relay For Life

I can’t really sum up how this relay was in just a few words. Being my first Relay for Life, I had no idea what to expect. I have previously walked the Susan K. Gomen Race for Cure, however that’s a 5k walk and easily finished in just a couple hours. This is totally different. Yes you are walking, but it is a relay and each team is asked to have a member on the track throughout the whole relay(Sequim is looking to do a full 24 hours next year for the first time). I think for a team of 5, we did pretty well, especially since one member was out of town. The luminaria ceremony was very nice way to honor and remember people. And it was fun watching the wish balloons go up in the air. All the luminarias around the track were pleasant to walk with as the night went on. Up in the stands they had used some of them to spell out “hope”.  The wee, wee hours none of us were on the track however Dean was up first and walking, followed by myself and then Grace. When emerged out of my tent at 5:30am you could still see most of the luminarias glowing. I joined Dean in walking around the track after I got some breakfast. We caught sight of Grace doing the Zumba so I joined her with that. I think I spent more time trying to figure out where my feet should go than actually dancing.

I started the relay keeping track of my laps in my head, that quickly ended when I forgot what lap I was on. At that point I got out the ipod and it’s nike+ app. While a few times it wasn’t tracking because I either paused for too long, or accidentally hit pause. Just the app tracked 10.5 miles. I probably walked close to another mile or two not logged with the ipod. Almost a half marathon! Woot! Even Quince walked a lap around the track.

Overall our team have raised just over $1100.00! Donations made through the end of the month count towards this relay, if you haven’t already please donate! The Relay as a whole raised over $38,000.00!
